Do It Anyway…
You won’t ever be good enough for some people.
Don’t let that stop you from trying it anyway.
I (Nicole) am a self-taught designer. I took on a new client. We seemed to get along well enough. I was excited to try a new project and expand my skills. I worked HARD on it - for much longer than the price point deemed necessary.
I turned it in 4 days later…and was told it was disappointing.
She provided some good and valid criticisms.
And then wrote “It looks like it was designed in Microsoft Word.”
I was devastated. That something I worked SO HARD ON could be so easily dismissed. In such a rude and cruel manner.
She went on to say that she had to redesign it, which is COMPLETELY fair. And to say maybe my skills would be better used creating social media for them?
Thanks, but no thanks.
Why am I sharing this painful story?
Because it highlights a very important point: YOU WILL NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE.
This is a fear that I have struggled with and continue to struggle with to this day.
But my encouragement to you is to NOT ALLOW THE FEAR OF FAILURE, OF CRITICISM, OF NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH STOP YOU FROM TRYING ANYWAY.
Just because you’re not good enough for ONE PERSON, doesn’t mean you aren’t any good at all.
I have a mountain of clients who are thrilled with my work. And I am reminding myself that I can take her valid critiques and make myself better moving forward. My “style” just doesn’t mesh with hers - AND THAT IS OKAY.
I am going to continue to “bite off more than I may be able to chew” because if I NEVER did, then I’d never actually know what I’m capable of nor would I be growing.
